Romans Bible Study Chapter 4 & 5
On Sunday’s until the end of August, we are doing a sermon series/Bible Study during our English language worship. Below are a copy of my outline/notes:
Theme: “The question wrestled with in this text is simply, ‘how big is Abraham’s family?’” Sarah Henrich, Professor of New Testament: http://www.workingpreacher.org/preaching.aspx?lect_date=2/17/2008&tab=3
Paul states his answer at the end 4: 16 -17
“Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring, not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. As it is written: ‘I have made you a father of many nations.’ He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed?the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.”
Paul based his idea on Genesis 15:6 – “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”
This was before Abraham’s own circumcision and before the law was given.
Chapter 4
Paul has declared that God’s righteousness is to be found in a system involving justification by faith and not be keeping the works of any law; thus he proceeds to provide evidence by referring to Abraham’s example.
