Romans 6-7 – August 2,2009
We are continuing our Romans Bible Study/Sermon series during our English worship through the end of August. These are my notes from August 2. Thank you for following this study.
Chapter 6
In 5:20 Paul made a statement “The law was added so that the trespass might increase.” This could easily be misconstrued. Paul (quickly?) points out that grace is no excuse to sin. To explain Paul tackles these questions: What takes place in baptism? And what does “freedom from sin” mean which we now may enjoy in Christ?
Through Baptism we died to sin 1-7
We are dead to sin, alive to God 8-14
We become a slave to whom we obey 15-18
The motivation for serving God 19-23
Chapter 7
Possibly for the benefit of his Jewish readers (“those who know the law”), Paul carries the concept of death and freedom one step further. We become dead to the Law so that we might be joined to Christ. He illustrates his point by painting an image of a marital relationship.
Parallel to being released from marriage 1-3
We have died to the law 4-6
The law is holy, just and good 7-12
However, the law cannot save one from sin 13-25
