Romans 8 – August 9, 2009
Following are my notes for our sermon/Bible Study during our English worship at Meito Christ International Church.
Chapter 8
In Chapter 7, Paul described the predicament of a person who becomes a prisoner of the law of sin. In the last few verses, Paul made reference to the hope of liberation possible by God through Jesus Christ. In chapter 8 Paul magnifies on what that freedom/liberation from sin found in Jesus Christ means in the present.
Important to remember that for Paul in the “body” there is “flesh” and “spirit.” However “flesh” and “spirit” are not two parts of human nature but rather two ways of living. The life of “flesh” is one of rebellion and idolatry. The life of “spirit” is one of following God.
Flesh and Spirit: Law and Life vs. 1-11 Read vs. 5-6
One of the joys of summer is the celebration of the 4th of July. If those who celebrate at times forgot that the occasion for such celebration is US national freedom, it is nevertheless that very freedom that allows them to enjoy themselves.
God’s Spirit and God’s Family vs.12-17 Read vs. 16-17
“They treated us just like family” is a way of expressing how warmly one has been received by others as a guest. God through the Holy Spirit not only treats us “just like family,” but actually unites into his family … by adoption.
The glory to be revealed vs. 18-25 Read vs. 24-25
Could there be conditions, however, which make suffering not only tolerable but even welcome.
The help of the Holy Spirit vs. 26-27 (Read all)
Spirit “intercedes” or is our “translator or ghost writer.”
All things working together for good vs. 28-30
God’s love toward his chosen (“elect”) vs. 31-39 Read vs. 35
